What is ALLOPURINOL®?
ALLOPURINOL® is a drug which is given at the start of some chemotherapy. When chemotherapy starts to kill the leukaemia cells, products are released from inside these cells which can crystallise and cause damage to the kidneys. Allopurinol stops these crystals from forming.
How is it given?
ALLOPURINOL® can be given by mouth as tablets. These can be crushed and mixed with water if your child has trouble taking tablets. Allopurinol tablets should be taken after food and your child will be encouraged to drink lots of fluids. Allopurinol can also be given into a vein through a cannula, Hickman or implantable port (intravenously).
What are the side effects of ALLOPURINOL®?
Rash: ALLOPURINOL® may sometimes cause a rash. If this occurs, inform the doctor or nurse. The doctor may advise slow re-introduction of the drug.
Diarrhoea: Please tell the doctor or nurse if your child has diarrhoea which is not controlled or persists. It is important that your child drinks lots of fluids.
Constipation: Your child may become constipated. This can generally be helped by drinking lots of fluids, and eating a high fibre diet. Sometimes the doctor may prescribe medicines to help stimulate your child’s bowel function.
